Cinnamon Sugar Churros

I got this recipe from Ellie@Almost Bourdain! When i first saw it i was literally squealing away in front of my laptop. I love churros. Never crossed my mind that i’d make them myself one day!

Cinnamon (Sugar) Churros
(From Almost Bourdain)

Sunflower oil, for deep frying
100 g plain flour
150 ml full-cream milk
2 medium eggs, beaten
50 g golden caster sugar
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon

Bring the milk and 150 ml water to the boil in a pan.

Take the pan off the heat and add the (sifted) flour all at once, beating vigorously with a wooden spoon until the mixture forms a thick paste – but don’t worry about any small lumps.

Leave to cool slightly and then gradually beat in enough of the eggs..

IMG_6773

..to make a smooth but still stiff, glossy mixture that drops reluctantly off the wooden spoon. It’s just like a choux pastry dough at this stage!

IMG_6774

Spoon the mixture into a piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle (aka my favourite piping tip of all! heehee.)

IMG_6780

Hold the bag over the hot oil and gently squeeze out a few 10-cm lengths of the mixture. Bloop bloop! This is where the fun comes in :P

IMG_6775

Leave them to fry for 4 minutes, turning them oven halfway through, until crisp and richly golden brown. Lift them out with a slotted spoon onto a baking tray lined with lots of kitchen paper and keep warm in the oven while you cook the remainder.

The first few!

Mix the caster sugar and cinnamon together in a shallow dish, add the churros a few at a time, and toss them gently until lightly coated.

Verdict? It’s good.. But not as churros. Definitely not churro texture! Honestly.. was rather disappointed :S But it’s worth giving this recipe a try if you’re not particular about churros like me. Hahaha, cos i really did enjoy making these! Really fun :)

Ellie, i still love you okay! Heh, you’ve motivated me to hunt for the churro recipe! :P

Something random..

Sorry phone camera quality! Hahaha, cos i made it early in the morning before lessons. I had to rush like crazy! But it was a good friend’s birthday and i really wanted to bake her something. She’s a huge fan of Spongebob. So i tried my best to actually draw it. Hahahaha! Was almost late for class making these. Heh.

Sudden thought.. I need a bake date. Anybody?

I was telling myself I have to make these soon. My daughter (and I, for that matter) chomped on churros everyday that we were in Disneyland. Cinnamon and sugar are perfect mates :)

Sorry it didn’t turn out the way you expected it to. It happened to me too, with a different recipe. I went for churro balls, and while they tasted good, they were more of cinnamon+dough :P But having said that, this looks good! Maybe I’ll try it after this :D
